Sapim 14G Internal Brass Nipple – 3.2 mm Square-Drive 12mm
The Sapim 14 Gauge Internal Nipple (also referred to as an ’inverted’ or ‘upside down’ nipple) is suitable for most rims that are drilled for internal nipples. Internal nipples allow the whole nipple to be hidden inside the rim for aerodynamic optimisation
These internal nipples are made from bras which overcomes the common issue of galvanic corrosion between alloy nipples and carbon fibre rims.
Product details
Material: Brass
Colour: silver
Thread pitch: 56 TPI, 14G
Length: 12.0 mm
Approximate width measurements:
Head: 6.0
Body: 3.9
Wrench flats: 3.2 (i.e. for 3.2mm Square Drive Internal Spoke wrenches)
Notes on usage
Wheels built with internal nipples are more prone to spoke breakages at the spoke thread near the top of the nipple. This is caused by a bending action on the spoke as it exists the rim cavity to align with the hub flange. If the spoke threads are not fully submerged in the nipple, a stress riser on the root on the spoke thread may develop. To counteract this problem, we recommend using spoke lengths that have at least 1mm of spoke thread protruding through end of the nipple when the wheel is built. Effective Rim Diameter measurements for spoke length calculations need to be adjusted to account for the desired spoke length when using internal nipples. The only exception for this approach would be in an extremely shallow rim (e.g. Enve G23) when the spoke threads might protrude too close to the rim holes and rim tape. Such rim profiles are extremely rare.
